Announcement Email

From: Richard Nannariello  (grandson of Luigi Nannariello and Francesca Martiniello Nannariello) and Steve Nannariello  (great grandson of Luigi Nannariello and Francesca Martiniello Nannariello)

Subject: Release of the Ancestry Website named ancestrycalitri.com

This Website was literally made available for the first time on the Internet in the last few days.

This announcement email  you are reading is in fact the method of “publishing” this website and making it available to people that would have an interest.

This email is being sent to an initial group of

  • People mentioned in this  ancestrycalitri.com  Website.
  • Family and friends of people mentioned in the website
  • People involved in the development of the website

The Website contains ancestry and lineage of selected families and individuals in those families  who have roots in Italy and many of whom immigrated to the United States.

Please consider these facts about this Website ancestycalitri.com

  • Required about four years of elapsed time in its development from start to finish
  • Required many thousands of hours of research and writing
  • Contains over 170,000 words
  • Organized into more than 150 topics
  • Lists many hundreds of people  and thousands of facts about their ancestry and lineage and personal stories
  • Contains hundreds of photos
  • Required the efforts of dozens of people
  • Is built with WordPress and other leading edge Internet tools to facilitate the flexible and long term maintenance and enhancement of the website.

Please consider the Ancestry story told in this website is not complete and never will be. It was simply determined “it was time to publish” the Ancestry story. as we know it at this point in time.

From its conception this Ancestry story was intended to be published as a website

  • It can be published initially and enhanced in the future with some ease and flexibility
  • Communications can be established with the website audience to acquire future research and improvements  and oral history
  • It makes the ancestry a living ancestry resource for both the developers and the Readers

The website  explores the Ancestry and lineage of selected families  from Calitri, Italy and  other cities in Italy over several centuries.  The ancestry is highly focused on the lineage of families in New York State and more specifically many parts of Westchester County because that is where this Ancestry story led us.

It is intended that through this announcement of the ancestrycalitri.com website, the initial recipients of this email will provide opportunities to  broadcast the Website to Friends and Family who are not on the initial Distribution List and may have an interest.

In preparation for understanding and evaluating the Website, it is recommended for those using it for the first time to do the following.  It was never intended that an Ancestry website of this scope would be a quick read.

  • Read the  Synopsis topic in  Website Management for an extensive overview of the entire website. It may be worth reading twice.
  • Click on every topic on the Home Page, possibly from left to right, and get an overview of what are the “chapters” of information and the structure of the website. You will see many familiar names of people and places and stories that may lead to your plan for exploring the website.
  • Having completed the first two steps, research and find topics related to your Family and possibly your name.

We hope everyone  having an interest in this ancestrycalitri.com website will  have an enjoyable and engaging and informative experience in their initial and long term efforts.

Enjoy your journey!

Richard Nannariello and Stephen Nannariello

Distribution List

Following is the  Distribution List used to announce the ancestrycalitri.com Website when  first making it available on the Internet.  This list  includes:

  • People involved in the research and development of the Ancestry
  • People and their families who are mentioned in the Ancestry
  • People who have expressed an interest

We apologize in advance to anyone who later discovers this Website and considers  they should have been included on this original Distribution List. The ability to get names and email addresses, which is the only way we can contact people, was a challenge. Any oversights can be considered unintentional.

If you know of Family and Friends who may benefit by this Website, please route the announcement email to them. It was our intention that this type of communication would occur and over time broaden the audience having access to the Website.

We did not seek permission to put people on this Distribution List, but were motivated to share the Website with  people we judged to be of interest. If anyone wishes to be taken off the Distribution  List, please use the Contact Website Development Team topic to let us know.  We are NOT  providing the actual email address for  everyone on this Distribution List for privacy reasons.

An asterisk appears after the name of people on the Distribution List who have contributed to developing this Ancestry.  Their  contributions could be a photo or some ancestry detail or an idea or checking some Ancestry facts.  Also, some  of the people acknowledged  made extensive contributions and are further acknowledged in the Special Acknowledgments  topic. All contribution efforts are  of significance and are appreciated.

Any correction and  additions to the List are appreciated. Please use the Contact Website Development Team topic to get a name added to the Distribution List and to make corrections.

The list is in alphabetic order by last name and then alphabetic order by first name within a  last name.  If there are two first names, it is in order by the first name that appears for that name.  If the person does not have an email capability, there is an indication of  “care of”   and the alternate email address  of a relative or  friend is provided.

Special Acknowledgements

Following are acknowledgements  for people who have played various major and support roles in the development of this Ancestry website.  From the beginning of the Ancestry effort in 2018 and through the final efforts it was an extraordinary team effort. Their collective efforts are also acknowledged in the Distribution List with an asterisk after their name.

Richard (Rich) Nannariello is the second son of Canio and Angie Nannariello, the grandson of Luigi and Francesca Nannariello, and the uncle  Stephen Nannariello. Sometime in 2018, he started developing ancestry information about the ancestry of his mother and father based on personal knowledge, recollections, personal oral history and from living ancestors. The scope of the Ancestry  quickly evolved and expanded over time.  It was immediately obvious that the Ancestry required  structured and heavy-duty ancestry research using the Internet and the appropriate contacts.  Steve Nannariello joined the Ancestry effort in 2018 and provided comprehensive structured research with a focus on Ancestry.com.  Simultaneously, Richard wrote several hundred pages of  Ancestry narrative and researched and adapted numerous topics from Wikipedia and other website sources to provide an historical perspective to the Ancestry story. Steve did extensive Internet research with a focus on Ancestry.com and Familysearch.org. These collective efforts resulted in building the  Ancestry Content File that was used to build and releasee the ancestrycalitri.com website in May 2023.

Stephen (Steve) Nannariello is the son of Louis and Nancy Nannariello, the grandson of Canio and Angie Nannariello, the great grandson of Luigi and Francesca Nannariello,  and the nephew of Richard Nannariello. Steve joined the Ancestry effort at the beginning in 2018  and  acquired expertise on ancestry research websites such as Ancestry.com and Familysearch.org and other Internet sources.  Also, Steve  established an extensive  and synergistic  network of  domestic and international contacts, who generously shared Ancestry searching expertise and information and methodologies. The scope and quality of this Ancestry project significantly expanded in conjunction with his expanding use of Internet research tools and contacts over a period of several years. Steve was relentless in building complex tree structures on Ancestry.com and then passing on  literally thousands of ancestry facts to be used in the writing of the website narrative. Steve’s research revealed lineage and stories and connections among family members and family history that were  not known and possibly would never have been known.

James (Jimmy) Nannariello is theson of Steve and Barbara Nannariello,  grandson of Charlie and Angie Nannariello, great grandson of Luigi and Francesca Nannariello and  great nephew of Richard Nannariello. He has vocations both as a broadly talented  musician and an Information Technology professional. Jimmy  develops and maintains  corporate  websites for the Bach and Rock Music corporation and its various franchises.  His technical support and counsel during the development of the Ancestry Content file  provided guidance in structuring the data to facilitate its implementation into a website.  Jimmy designed and implemented the technical implementation of the Ancestry website using the latest and most  current website tools, including Word Press. He is responsible for  technically supporting future enhancements to this Ancestry website.  This Ancestry website is the fourth website he has implemented with Richard Nannariello.

Krissy Nannariello is the wife of Jimmy Nannariello and daughter-in-law of Steve and Barbara Nannariello. In the early stages of the website development in 2018, she explored Ancestry.com and identified many Ancestry.com tools and methods eventually used to do the rigorous research that was required for this project. She passed on much of the initial Ancestry.com research information and expertise that was used for the long-term development of this Ancestry.

Barbara Nannariello is the wife of Steve Nannariello. She displayed great patience and support for Steve through the four years of the Ancestry development and Steve’s  many countless  hundreds of hours of research and emails and endless telephone calls. Barbara has a heritage of her family being emigrants from Lebanon and knows first-hand  the importance and contribution of Steve’s efforts.

Jean Nannariello is the wife of Richard Nannariello. She displayed great patience and support for Richard during the four years of endless hours on the computer and the Internet and the piles of folders on the desk. The response to the rhetorical question she asked many times, “when will the Ancestry be done” was answered on May 26, 2023  at 3:19  PM when she saw the printout of the email announcing the issue of the ancestrycalitri.com website. Jean and her Mother and Father, two brothers and two sisters were emigrants from Scotland. She has lived another version of the  immigration story.

Joseph DeCosmo is the son of Rose Nannarello DeCosmo and the grandson of Luigi and Francesca Nannariello. He wrote the following topic for this Ancestry: “Visits to Calitri 1953  Joseph DeCosmo.”  Joe was in the Army and  stationed in Germany in 1953and literally was the first child of the six Nannariello siblings of Luigi and Francesca Nannariello to visit Calitri.

Richard Nannariello II is the son of Richard Nannariello and grandson of Canio Nannariello and Great Grandson of Luigi and Francesca Nannariello. He wrote several topics for this Ancestry: Visits to Calitri Richard Nannariello II 1976; White Plains Rural Cemetery; and White Plains Rural Cemetery History. His visit to Calitri,  was part of a one year exploration trip to Europe. He is the second direct descendant of the six Nannariello siblings to return to Calitri. He has been an active participant in discussions about the Ancestry project and his first hand recollections of his grandfather, Canio Nannariello.

Lynn Nannariello is the daughter of Louis and Nancy Nannariello,  and sister of Steven Nannariello and participated in writing the topic “Angie Nannariello’s Pearls.”  Also, she  provided valuable feedback on approaches for professional story editing crafts for the website by reading and editing a cross section of the final document.

Mario Toglia has ancestry roots in Calitri and shares a family tree with Steve Nannariello and Richard Nannariello.  He has written three excellent and comprehensive books, of over 1600 pages,  about the immigration of Calitrani from Calitri to the United States. He and his team are currently working on a fourth book. The book titles and publisher and overviews of the content are  referenced in this Ancestry website. Mario provided significant research support and  encouragement by both his deeds and his books and was instrumental in providing inspiration for this project. On many occasions Mario was the final and enabling resource for finding  pieces of research and providing guidance in the Ancestry research.  Anyone having a robust interest in the Calitri immigration should consider investigating his three books.

Alfonso Nannariello is the son of Vincenzo Nannariello and shares great-great grandparents with Steve Nannariello and Richard Nannariello. Alfonsowas born and lived a life time in Calitri  and retired from teaching in Calitri schools. Alfonso and Steve Nannariello did not speak a common language, but language translation tools available in  Facebook and Google made it possible for them to share information and become good friends and became bonded. They discussed ideas for hopefully exchanging  reciprocating visits to Italy and the United States. Unfortunately, Alfonso  passed in 2021after a medical procedure. He was much too young and much was left undone related to his intellectual interests  and endless curiosity about Calitri and his Ancestry.  Alfonso  contributed several significant articles to the Ancestry that were translated into English. There are appropriate citations for his work. Also, he was a  prolific writer and published more than a dozen books on poetry and fiction.  Alfonso’s voice shall be heard in this Ancestry and his voice will be missed.

Anna Maria Cavicchia AKA Anna Maria Soprano  is a marvelously talented Italian soprano born and raised in Udine Italy, not far from Venezia. Anna Maria performed the vocals for the two Calitri Celebration Songs, specifically “ Calitrani Skies” and “Pavarotti Sings Forever.” Her ability to sing and uniquely interpret  original songs were an inspiration to write these songs. Anna Maria has performed for more than three decades in Italy and the Dominican Republic and the United States. She has on YouTube  more than fifty original songs written by Richard Nannariello some with an Italian genre.

Ethan Seibert is a talented Daytona Beach, Florida  Information Technology  professional supporting many Microsoft products and  platforms,  various Internet technologies, creative photography, and many computer technologies. He has provided technical assistance for the duration of this Ancestry project. Ethan provided excellent technical and creative skills to adapt all of the photos in this Ancestry and provided a variety of technical support in the Ancestry development.  Richard Nannariello had the good fortune to have a collection of photos that were from his mother, Angie Nannariello, when she passed in 1996. Collecting and researching and modifying photos was a significant task  and Ethan provided extensive technical and creative support.

Gina Santella is a good friend of Steve Nannariello and has ancestral roots in Gildone, Italy and lives in Montreal, Canada.  Filomena Farinacci Passarella, who is a major participant  in this Ancestry, had her roots in Gildone. Steve Nannariello and Gina met on Ancestry.com when their paths crossed while  doing family research.  They have bonded in their interest and efforts on Ancestry research. Gina has been extraordinarily supportive and helpful in this Ancestry research and using the latest research tools.  As an example,  she opened up significant areas of ancestry research for the Passarella and Farinacci branch  of the family that at one time was a dead end in the research. Also, she provided an innovative graphic method for describing  this Ancestry family tree. Steve cites a list of ancestry research techniques and tools he has learned from Gina and she has been supportive in many ways.

Vito Acocella (1883-1968)  was a priest from Calitri, Italy and living in Naples at the time of the 1910 earthquake that devastated many villages in central Italy, including Calitri. Vito visited Calitri shortly after the earthquake and assigned himself the responsibility in ensure  that Calitri and its people and its history would be remembered. He wrote the Storia di Calitri or  History of Calitri in Italian and published it around 1920. Later he completed further research and made a significant update and published that version around 1950. Various sections of this history have been included in this Ancestry as separate articles. Also, the entire 1950 edition of the History of Calitri is included in  this Ancestry (See History of Calitri) with the facility to search the entire history of more than 350 pages by chapters. The History of Calitri has both informed and inspired the development of this Ancestry. Vito Acocella’s Italian version of the History of Calitri was translated into English by Ben Montalbano.

Ben Montalbano is American born and has ancestral roots in Calitri, Italy.  Around 1980 Ben took on a project to translate Vito Acocella’s masterful History of Calitri from Italian to English, sixty years after the first edition of the book was published by Acocella in Italian.  He was attending college and took on this project to both prove and develop his Italian language skills. Ben lives in Dunmore Pennsylvania.  When contacted by the Ancestry team around 2020, he graciously permitted using his magnificent translation in this Ancestry intact and verbatim. An opinion of this Ancestry Team is  this may be one of the most comprehensive histories of a small village in Italy that has ever been produced.

Many Contributors  have made contributions for specific topics and provided oral history and first-person accounts about some of the people in the Ancestry:  Frank Passarella, Ronnie Lombardi, Marie Ronda, Christine Amendola, Gloria Cipolla.

Future Contributors are welcomed to make contributions to the website. There are opportunities to enhance this Ancestry with personal perspectives and oral history that will enliven and bring more depth to all aspects of this Ancestry story. Please see the Website Development Team Contact  subject to get email contact protocols.

Many Families and Friends are offered thanks and appreciation for supporting many of  those people acknowledged above. Many are part of the Families described in this Ancestry who generously shared oral history, provided detailed ancestry facts,  and did extensive fact checking on the Ancestry narrative. Others  were “Internet Buddies” who had a shared interest in our Ancestry research. All of their great  collective  patience and efforts are  appreciated. They assisted greatly  as the project got bigger and deadlines were missed and we found we needed “one more piece of absolutely essential ancestry information.”  Their collective efforts were  critical to what has been accomplished in telling this Ancestry story.

Future Contributors  hopefully will come forward after being exposed to the ancesrycalitri.com  website  and provide additional research and oral history and personal perspectives.  Their collective efforts will  make this Ancestry a living narrative of a wonderful story that needed to be told.  There are  more stories to be told and our Future Contributors will hopefully come forward!

Our Ancestors have in fact created this Ancestry through their lives and good deeds and the heritage they so graciously passed on to us. On the first page of the website are several quotations about Ancestry. One of the quotations reads as follows: “We must strive to become good ancestors.”  We must offer our gratitude to all of our Ancestors for being “good ancestors” and we accept the burden they pass on to us to continue that tradition.

The sum total of the efforts and expertise of all those acknowledged above, far exceeds any  reasonable collective expectations. Literally, what was accomplished in this Ancestry is far more than the sum of the parts and the efforts.  It was a team effort.

During the development of this Ancestry, the occasions for any of the above people being physically together were very limited and rare. This was a team effort of people often working alone and cooperatively using email, ancestry websites, various other websites, text messages, cell phones, file transfers, social media, language translation tools, the mails, various Internet tools, and a lot of patience and innovative cooperation. We were not all physically together,  but we all worked together as a Team.

All of You mentioned above shall be remembered and are sincerely thanked and appreciated that  this Ancestry website is “out there” because of your collective efforts. You have made it possible to tell a story that needed to be told.

You are acknowledged and thank you again.
